The choice is to banish the troupe (which gets you carefree) or to complete the ritual (defeating NKG). You can get it on a different file though if you banish the troupe there instead of defeating NKG.

He is the most loyal member in the troupe, but later starts to question the ritual of fiery rebirth and the service to The Nightmare's Heart.
